A Lesson in Religion

The 10 Commandments:
  1. You shall have no other gods before me.
  2. You shall not make for yourself any carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.
  3. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.
  4. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your manservant, nor your maidservant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.
  5. Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.
  6. You shall not murder.
  7. You shall not commit adultery.
  8. You shall not steal.
  9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
  10. You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.

The 7 Deadly Sins:

1. Lust (luxuria)
2. Gluttony (gula)
3. Greed (avaritia)
4. Sloth (acedia)
5. Wrath (ira)
6. Envy (invidia)
7. Pride (superbia)

We're big about numbers in religion. I've known ever since I was a little kid and I went to Sunday school every day it was in session. Yes, back in the day the seventh day was the day of rest and 'worship' in my life and I was happy with it. Now though, I honestly admit I haven't been to church on a regular basis for nearly seven years. I hit the especially holy days and I go when I feel the need to despite what certain individuals think. I have my reasons for this rather lengthy break too, but I don't feel the need to discuss them at length here. However, I don't believe my church going habits will have any severe affect on what happens to me when I die. I don't believe that you have to go to a church to pray or ask for forgiveness. Maybe I'm crazy in that way, but sometimes a part of me believes church is just an added food for thought. It's nice to just go sometimes, don't get me wrong. You do get that food for thought and you're surround by people who (hopefully) share the same faith system you hold. It's nice, don't get me wrong. But am I going to go every Sunday because I fear that if I don't God's wrath will rain down on me or because I want to share that connection with God when I'm in need of guidance?

Now, don't get me wrong, if you ask me what religion I am, my reply will be "Catholic". I believe it. I practice it. I may not go to church every Sunday, but that doesn't mean that I don't hold it any less dear or defining or that I won't teach it on to my family someday. It's there. And just because it may not be as prevalent as yours doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
